Noyes' "Handwork in Wood" is a classic text on woodworking, recommended by many. I was led to this book by Christopher Schwarz' writing and looked forward to learning from it. Unfortunately this Kindle edition has left out all the illustrations, making it pretty much useless. Luckily there are plenty of used print editions available at very reasonable prices. Get one of those instead.Or get a Kindle edition from The Gutenberg Project. They have several versions for the Kindle and other platforms, with and without illustrations. I got the Kindle edition, downloaded it to my Kindle, and I'm looking at it now. The photos are a bit dim (they'd probably look better on a paperwhite Kindle) but the pen-and-ink illustrations are very clear.

wood doesn't change. tools and methods change, but many like working wood "the old way," or just learning about it. a fun, interesting read
I ordered this book for my , which I typically use my Samsung Tab 2 to read ebooks on. Much to my disappointment, none of the illustrations were there, and there are hundreds referenced to. I removed it from my library. For "free dollars", I'm glad I didn't pay anything for it. I'll be sure to download a sample from now on when offered.
Just Ok
This is an old primer about the quality of wood and the tools in its craft. It is a very good beginner's book for informing a person about the various aspects of carpentry.
Handwork in Wood is a delightful history of the woodworker of yore. While seldom the sort of "practical woodworking information" that you get from repeated monthly doses of retold magazine How To's, I found each page fascinating and informative. Noyes has helped me appreciate my hobby as much as any writer.
I know a little about wood and woodworking,but certainly not enough to attempt a project like repairing and improving our decaying deck. I bought this book with the hopes it would help,and it did. Took me longer than most, but I finally got the deck done, and it turned out the way we wanted it. No way would I have known what I was doing without this book.
I recently became interested in weaving which uses a lot of relatively expensive yet simple wooden tools. I was able to make some of the tools myself and became interested in making more complex wooden tools for weaving (and spend my money on buying yarn!) Since I have not had any experience in woodworking this sounded like a useful book to check out. The book has a lot of details, unfortunately the kindle version is missing images. I found the book useful but it would be much better if the images were included.
Written in 1910 but much of it content that relates to tools and techniques is still relevant today. The publication begins with the discussion of logging, starting with preparing for the logging,felling of the trees, floating the wood to its destination, saw milling, seasoning the wood, and storing lumber. The first 3 chapters cover these topics in great detail. Even though I did not find them relevant to my interest, I found the details both impressive and interesting.
In chapter 4 the author starts the discussion of hand tools. Each tool and the technique of using it described. As I mentioned earlier the book contains no images, but the descriptions are so detailed that it is possible to follow without the images.
In Chapter 5, the author proceeds to wood fastening, covering everything from nails and screws to hinges and locks.
If found a chapter of joints quite interesting. Being new to woodworking I did not realize there were so many.
Chapter 10 covers wood finishing. The author discusses types of stains, advantages of each, a bit of history where they came from, and of course, the techniques.
The author is clearly a master craftsman with an ability to explain what he knows. I am very impressed with this book both in the amount of information and the clarity of explanations. Much of it content is still relevant today. It certainly helped me to determine which tools I need to buy and some of the techniques for using them.
